The LAN is a computing event where people of all ages can bring their computer and play networked games, share files, and generally have a good time. The LAN is designed to be a social computing event, so if you enjoy playing games or tinkering with computers make sure you come along!
Location & Times
The LAN is held on the Charles Sturt University Bathurst campus. The LAN starts at 10am, and finishes around 10:30pm the same day. However attendees are welcome to turn up and whatever time suits them best.
For more information regarding the exact location & building please see the Map section.
Cost
The LAN has an entry fee of $10.00 if you have registered on the website. This fee includes gigabit network access and power for your computer, and lunch and dinner for you! We typically have a BBQ for lunch, and pizza for dinner, however we are always open to suggestions on the day.
If you forget to register you are still welcome to attend, however there is an entry fee of $15 for unregistered attendees to help cover extra costs.
Prizes
Lucky door prizes are generally offered every event. Recent prizes have included peripheral hardware (gaming mice, FPS mice, USB keys, etc), hard drives, gigabit network cards, RAM, movie tickets, games, and more.
Prizes are also awarded for competitions, such as the recent Starcraft competition.
Competitions
Major competitions are held every now and then for special occasions. Prizes are usually awarded to first, second, and third place. We have also introduced mini tournaments each month. These involve usually two games of different genres, voted on by attendees before the upcoming LAN. These do not usually involve prizes, but placings are kept track of.
What To Bring
You'll need to bring your computer for starters. Make sure it has a functional network card so you can access the network, and be sure to bring all attachments you need (power cables, monitor, keyboard, mouse etc). You can bring any computer brand you want, and it can run any Operating System you want. However please note the admin team can only help you with Operating Systems they are familiar with (primarily Windows XP/Vista and Mac OS X).
Please note that speakers are banned (as the noise interferes with other attendees). So make sure you pack a set of headphones for sound.
We also ask that you bring a clean powerboard with at least 4 ports on it. Double adapters are banned, as they create a power hazard in a LAN environment.
What Not To Bring
As mentioned above, speakers are banned at The LAN due to the interference with other people they can cause.
Network cables are supplied by The LAN, so you don't need to bring your own.
